SortIT - Recycling app

A recyling service to make recycling more simple

Summary

This was a university group project focusing on how to improve public service platforms.

With the overwhelming amount of different kinds of trash and rules, it can become increasingly difficult to determine which bins go in which according to where you live. Each municipality in the Kingdom of Denmark has a different set of rules and resources regarding recycling. Our solution to this problem comes in an app "SortIT" that takes all recycling regulations and puts them into an encyclopedia, where users can quickly look up the specific type of trash they wish to throw out, where it goes, as well as their impact on the environment in doing so.

User journey

The user journey is depicted in shows how a user, needing to dispose of recyclable waste, would use the prototype to find the correct bin. The journey illustrates the prototype's role throughout the user experience. The channels connect devices (both electronic and physical trash cans) and interactions. The channels "People" and "by-law" are independent of devices; "People" create and dispose of trash, while "by-law" represents recycling laws set by the council. These channels lead to touchpoints, the key steps in the user journey: creating trash, holding trash, researching sorting, finding the bin, and disposing of it. The "research trash sorting" step highlights how the prototype aids in finding the necessary information.

Wireframes

The user journey helped set the base for the wireframe sketching in the “research trash sorting” touchpoints. The wireframes show the thought process for how the user will navigate the app. They also helped create a discussion of what content should be on the site, which colour would work best, and what icons and fonts should be used in the prototype.

Results

Recycling is considered a mundane task in modern society and not as engaging as people would like it to be. Despite being a tough subject, the SortIT recycling app would take a step in the right direction and try to make recycling more accessible and more fun. It is not the definite solution towards better recycling, but a stepping

stone. Theoretically, based on the research and results "SortIT" would make recycling easier.
